French-English Bilingual Visual Dictionary (DK Bilingual Visual Dictionary)

Here are testimonials
-« My grandchildren were very happy to get this dictionary. They’re aged between 12 and 16. They enjoy the pictures, and find it easier to remember the words when associated with photos ».
-« This is an excellent bilingual visual dictionary that we use extensively during our French tuition. Most of the daily life subjects are covered. Very useful for either tuition or live interaction with locals. Highly recommended ».
-« The DK Visual Dictionaries / Books are consistently excellent and thus little bilingual visual dictionary is no exception. A broad range of topics is oversee and learning is greatly facilitated by the visual content. Highly recommend ! »
-« This book is utterly brilliant. I wish I had one of these when I was studying French many years ago. Will save hundreds of hours searching for vocabulary and ultimately make you a far better French speakers. And a really very reasonable price for what you get. I liked it so much I plan to order the Italian, German and Spanish versions too ».
-« Since memory is by association, it has been easy to associate the words to the pictures and enhance the retaining power ! »

Collins Primary French Dictionary: Learn with words (Collins French School Dictionaries)

Here are testimonials
-« Collins have done an absolutely brilliant job with this English-to-French dictionary aimed at primary-younger learners – I wish I had been lucky enough to have a book as useful and as clear as this before starting to learn French at school. As much as it is a dictionary (and a very good one) it is also an incredibly useful phrase book and although designed for primary learners if you’re only a basic French talker or just learning yourself then this book is brilliant and advanced enough to teach you tons. On the dictionary front it is very simple with the English word in blue and the French word in red but it also has the article in front of the French word (i.e le, la, les etc) depending on the word being masculine, feminine or plural plus it has the class stated next to the word also (i.e if the word is male or female and if it’s a noun, verb, adjective, adverb or pronoun) which together is incredibly useful for any younger learners to get familiar with this before more serious language studies. It also shows any multiple meanings of the same word, which in french is essential, of course. But best of all it does all of this within a context, showing each word in either a sentence or a phrase, so it’s actually a really useful phrase book just as much as it’s a dictionary. The layout makes all of this so simple and fun to read through that it won’t seem daunting or like a chore to youngsters and on top of this every double page has 2-4 pictures on it, a very interesting little ‘Did You Know’ box with a related fact, as well as word specific note boxes and occasional ‘Language Tip’ boxes with helpful advice on spelling an grammar. This is a brilliant French phrase book / dictionary combo for anyone learning French – young and old ! »
-« This is an excellent French to English and English to French dictionary, and – just like the Collins English dictionary for children – much thought has gone into the layout. There are little tips and facts scattered throughout the book; who knew that baked beans translated to ‘white beans in tomato sauce’? At the centre of the dictionary there is a Language Plus section that covers topics such as clothes, the weather, school subjects and animals, etc. The design of this dictionary, together with the colour coding, makes it very easy to use – and the only criticism I have is that pronunciation is not included. Nevertheless, it’s still worthy of 5 stars ».

Collins French Visual Dictionary (Collins Visual Dictionaries)

Here are testimonials
-« I wish I’d had one of these when I was a 9yo kid forced to learn French in a country where it was the joint second language with English. French is not an easy language to perfect, especially with nouns having genders and verbs needing to be conjugated accordingly. This is frankly brilliant, and isn’t just for kids. Anyone interested in France and the French way of life would benefit from this, especially as you can download an audio guide for use with perfecting your pronunciation. The dictionary, at about 4 inches wide, 6 inches long and about 0.5 inches deep is light and easy to carry, so you could take this on holiday as well as a guide book. The sections on food, eating out, transport and the basics of what might be different in France (covered under The Basics in each section), e.g., opening hours for shops might differ from town to village, toilets might not always be located inside a house, reminders about siestas, that French tobacconists carry a lot more than tobacco and newspapers, little hints about French etiquette, etc. are particularly handy for first-time visitors. I expected this to be a lot more expensive than it is, and would happily have paid more. The Kindle version is an even better version for travellers, as it’s about a third of the price of the paperback ».
-« What an excellent idea! This is the kind of handy-sized dictionary/book it would have been fantastic to have when I was taking my French GCSEs (a few decades ago) and is perfect to take with you on holidays to France (or any other French speaking country), as it is divided up into themed chapters (transport, in the home, at the shops, day-to-day, leisure, sport, health, planet Earth and celebrations & festivals) with specific easily findable sub-sections that you can quickly turn to for help when you need it. Naturally, in this technological age, you can get top class translation app for your smartphones, but the fact that this is an illustrated dictionary – aimed at an adult audience – means that it could potentially be a better communication aid than words and speech. There are also snippets of useful information dotted throughout the book, aimed at helping the user navigate their way round France and French customs. Honestly, I’m so impressed that I wouldn’t hesitate to buy the relevant title if I was visiting any country where language was a potential barrier. I’m hoping that this book helps my daughter, as she’s planning to take French as a GCSE, and I think that it is the kind of aid that would be useful for any student learning the basics of the language ».
