In this article I share with how using the words Nombre / Numéro – An / Année.
NOMBRE / NUMÉRO / CHIFFRE
- We use the word NOMBRE when it comes to a quantity.
Example :
Quel est le nombre d’élèves dans cette classe ? → What is the number of students in this class ?
Quel est le nombre d’abonnés à la chaine YouTube ? → How many subscribers to the YouTube channel ?
- We use the word NUMÉRO when it comes to an element of a series.
Example :
Quel est le numéro de série de ton ordinateur ? → What is the serial number of your computer ?
Quel est le numéro de ce joueur de foot ? → What is the number of this football player ?
- The CHIFFRES are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
Example :
Dans le nombre 345, il y a trois chiffres : le 3, le 4 et le 5. → In number 345, there are three numbers : 3, 4 and 5.
AN / ANNÉE
- We use the word AN to express the unit of time.
Example :
J’ai trois ans, vingt ans. → I am three years old, twenty years old.
Ce document a trois cents ans. → This document is three hundred years old.
Il y a deux ans, on vivait au Brésil. → Two years ago, we lived in Brazil.
On va en France cinq fois par an. → We go to France five times a year.
- We use the word ANNÉE to express the duration.
Example :
Cette année, on part aux États Unis. → This year, we go to the United States.
Ce cirque reste toute l’année dans cette ville. → This circus stays all year in this city.
L’entreprise a fait une année désastreuse ! → The company has had a disastrous year !
Il est en troisième année. → He is in third grade.
Combien d’années ? Des millions d’années – Chaque année – Plusieurs années. → How many years ? Millions of years - Every year - Several years.
Pay attention
We can say tous les ans OR toutes les années.
