In this article I share with you when to use The time of the indicative. You can use them with the all verbs.

Present tense

The time of the indicative

  • What I’m doing, I say right now.

Je mange une pomme. I am eating an apple.

  • What is happening now. The present context.

La course se déroule sous les yeux des spectateurs. The race takes place in front of the spectators.

  • What is usual, a general truth.

La terre tourne autour du soleil. Earth spins around the Sun.

Perfect tense (Passé composé)

The time of the indicative

  • One-off action that has taken place in the past and is completed.

Hier, j’ai été au restaurant. Yesterday I went to the restaurant.

Perfect tense (Imparfait)

  • A past action or a past state that lasted.

A past habit that is no longer current. Quand j’étais enfant, j’allais à la ferme tous les dimanches. When I was a child, I went to the farm every Sunday.

  • A description of something that has been seen, read, heard; of someone we met.

De ma cabane je voyais le soleil se coucher. From my cabin I saw the sun go down.

Futur

The time of the indicative

  • A situation, a project to come.

J’irai à Paris pour les vacances. I will go to Paris for the holidays.

Present tense

  • What I’m doing, I say right now.

1 – Je (faire)……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..……….du vélo.

I’m riding a bike.

2 – Nous (nager)…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..dans le lac.

We are swimming in the lake.

  • What is happening now. The present context.

3 – Le train (partir)……………………………………………………………………………..de la gare Montparnasse à Paris.

The train is leaving Montparnasse station in Paris.

4 – Ma sœur (lire)………………………………………………………………………………………………..un livre dans le salon.

My sister is reading a book in the living room.

  • Ce qui est habituel, une vérité générale.

5 – Le soleil (se coucher)…………………………………………………………………………………………………….…..à l’ouest.

The sun sets in the west.

Perfect tense (Passé composé)

  • One-off action that has taken place in the past and is completed.

1 – Nous (surfer)………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………à Hawaï.

We surfed in Hawaii.

2 – Ils (être)………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..…..à Paris à Noël.

They were in Paris at Christmas. 3 – Tu (faire)……………………………………………………………………………………………………………..…….du parapente.

You did paragliding.

4 – Vous (être)……………………………………………………………………………………………………………..………au théâtre.

You’ve been to the theater.

5 – Elles (aimer)………………………………………………………

……………………………..dessiner pendant l’après-midi.

They loved drawing during the afternoon.

Perfect tense (Imparfait)

  • Past action or past state that has lasted. A past habit that is no longer current.

1 – Nous (aller)………………………..……à la plage tous les ans quand nous (être)………………………………petit.

We went to the beach every year when we were child.

2 – Je (faire)………………………………………………………………..………un gâteau pour l’anniversaire de ma sœur.

I made a cake for my sister’s birthday.

3 – Elles (sauter)…………………………………………………………………………………………………………….dans la piscine.

They jumped into the pool.

  • A description of something that has been seen, read, heard; of someone we met.

4 – Il (jouer)………………………………………………………………………………………..de la musique dans sa chambre.

He played music in his room.

5 – Ils (porter)………………………………………………………………………………………………….des vêtements rouges.

They wore red clothes.

Futur

  • A situation, a project to come.

1 – Le train (arriver)………………………………………………………………………..à la gare de Lyon dans 10 minutes.

The train will arrive at the Lyon station in 10 minutes.

2 – Vous (aller)…………………………………………………………………………………aux Etats-Unis pour la conférence.

You will go to the United States for the conference.

3 – Elles (jouer)…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….aux cartes.

They will play cards.

4 – Je (réparer)………………………………………………………………………………………………………….…..le vélo demain.

I will repair the bike tomorrow.

5 – Tu (skier)……………………………………………………………………………………………………….…..au mois de Février.

You will ski in February.
